How to use US Sales Tax by State
- Pick your state — its 2025 statewide base sales-tax rate loads automatically.
- Add your local city/county rate in the local-rate field to get the full combined rate.
- Choose a mode: 'Add tax' to add tax onto a price, or 'Remove tax' to pull it out of a tax-inclusive total.
- Read the total at the top and the net / tax / gross breakdown below.
Common use cases
- Checkout totals. Add your state and local sales tax to a shelf price so you know exactly what you'll pay at the register.
- Receipts and reimbursement. Reverse the tax out of a tax-inclusive total to find the pre-tax price for expense reports and accounting.
- Pricing across states. Compare what the same product costs after tax in different states when the base rates differ.
Tips
- The built-in figures are statewide base rates — most cities and counties add a local rate on top, so enter yours for the exact total.
- Five states levy no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (though some Alaska localities charge a local tax).
- Use 'Remove tax' whenever a price already includes tax and you need the pre-tax amount.
Troubleshooting
- The total is lower than what I actually paid.
- The state figure is only the base rate. Add your city and county rate in the local-rate field — combined rates can be several points higher.
- My state shows a 0% base rate.
- That state has no statewide sales tax. If your locality charges a local tax (as some Alaska boroughs do), enter it in the local-rate field.
- Reversing tax by subtracting the percentage gives a different number.
- Tax is charged on the net price, so you divide the gross by (1 + rate) rather than subtracting the percentage. The tool does this correctly.
Frequently asked questions
- Are the state sales tax rates up to date for 2025?
- Yes. Each state's 2025 statewide base rate is built in. Local city and county rates change more often and vary by location, so you enter those yourself.
- Why is the tax lower than what I paid in a store?
- The state rate is only the base. Most cities and counties add a local sales tax on top — enter your local rate to get the exact combined total.
- Which states have no sales tax?
- Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Some Alaska localities still charge a local sales tax.
- How do I find the price before tax?
- Switch to 'Remove tax' mode and enter the tax-inclusive total. The tool divides by (1 + combined rate) to give the correct pre-tax price.
- Is anything I enter uploaded?
- No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
