How to use Sales Tax Calculator

  1. Choose a mode: 'Add tax' to add tax onto a net price, or 'Remove tax' to work out the pre-tax price from a tax-inclusive total.
  2. Enter the price. In add mode it's the price before tax; in remove mode it's the price including tax.
  3. Type the tax rate as a percentage.
  4. Read the result at the top and the full net / tax / gross breakdown below.

Common use cases

  • Retail and receipts. Add local sales tax to a shelf price to know the checkout total, or reverse it from a receipt to find the pre-tax amount.
  • VAT invoicing. Freelancers and businesses can add VAT to an invoice, or extract the VAT portion from a gross figure for accounting.
  • Pricing decisions. Set a tax-inclusive round price for customers, then reverse out the tax to see your true net revenue per sale.
  • Expense reporting. Split a tax-inclusive expense into net and tax so you can record each correctly.

Tips

  • US sales tax is added on top of the listed price; in much of Europe VAT is already included in the sticker price — use the matching mode.
  • Reverse (remove-tax) mode is the one to use whenever the price already includes tax and you need the net.
  • Sales tax rates vary by state, county and city in the US — check your exact combined rate.
  • The tool works for any rate, so it handles VAT (often 20%), GST (often 5–18%) and any local sales tax.

Troubleshooting

My reversed net doesn't match a simple subtraction.
You can't just subtract the percentage from a gross price. Tax is a percentage of the net, so the tool divides by (1 + rate) — which is the correct method.
Which mode do I need?
If your starting price does NOT yet include tax, use Add. If it already includes tax and you want the pre-tax figure, use Remove.

Frequently asked questions

Can this calculate VAT and GST too?
Yes. Sales tax, VAT and GST all work the same way mathematically — just enter your rate. Use 'Remove tax' when the price already includes VAT/GST.
How do I find the price before tax?
Switch to 'Remove tax' mode and enter the tax-inclusive total. The tool divides by (1 + rate) to give you the correct net price.
Why can't I just subtract the tax percentage?
Because tax is charged on the net price, not the gross. Subtracting the percentage from the gross over-removes it. Dividing by (1 + rate) is the accurate way.
What sales tax rate should I use?
In the US, combine your state, county and city rates — many places publish the total. Elsewhere use your national VAT or GST rate.
Is anything I enter uploaded?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser with nothing sent to a server.
