How to use Meta Description Character Counter
- Paste or type your meta description into the text box — the counters update on every keystroke.
- Watch the status line: green means you're in the 155–160 character sweet spot, amber means it's a little short, red means Google will likely truncate it.
- Add your page title above to see a realistic Google search-result preview of how the snippet will read.
- Trim or expand your copy until both the character count and the estimated pixel width sit under the limit.
- Click 'Copy description' and paste it straight into your CMS or <meta name="description"> tag.
Common use cases
- On-page SEO.
- Bulk content audits.
- Writing for click-through.
Tips
- Google truncates by pixel width, not a fixed character count — a description full of wide letters (m, w) can be cut earlier than a narrow one. The 'Est. pixels' figure tracks this; keep it under ~920.
- Mobile snippets are shorter than desktop. If most of your traffic is mobile, aim closer to 120 characters to stay safe.
- Google often rewrites descriptions anyway — write for humans first, keep the primary keyword near the start, and treat the length target as a guide, not a guarantee.
Troubleshooting
Frequently asked questions
- Is my text uploaded anywhere?
- No. The counter runs entirely in your browser. Your meta description and page title never leave your device and nothing is sent to a server.
- How long should a meta description be?
- Aim for roughly 155–160 characters. Google truncates longer snippets with an ellipsis, and very short ones waste space you could use to earn the click.
- Does Google count characters or pixels?
- Pixels. Google cuts the snippet at about 920 pixels on desktop, so two descriptions with the same character count can truncate differently. This tool estimates both.
